Onboard Seminar: "Cabernet Conundrum" Expressions of California Cabernet and More from the Winemakers Cellars
Originating in Bordeaux as a premier grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon has transcended borders to become a global phenomenon. Its distinctive character makes it easily recognizable wherever it's grown. Early iterations from various regions often bore resemblance to Bordeaux wines. However, in today's era, a confluence of factors including climate shifts and evolving consumer preferences, influenced in part by influential figures like Robert Parker, have steered winemakers towards a more opulent, fruit-forward style—not only in the New World but also in Bordeaux itself.
In the face of evolving trends, Cabernet producers are confronted with critical questions: Should they conform to this new paradigm, or preserve the classic, more restrained styles of the past? Is there space to distinguish themselves amidst a sea of bold, mass-market wines? Some opt for a nuanced approach, crafting terroir-driven wines where fruit is balanced, oak is restrained, and sweetness, if present, is subtle. They ponder whether there remains a market for diverse expressions of Cabernet, including those designed for cellaring, at a time when most bottles are consumed shortly after purchase. Taste the expressions of this "world traveler" of a varietal – made by each of your host winemakers, Rod Berglund and Rick Moshin.
For the Moshin & Joseph Swan 2025 Bordeaux Wine Cruise -- which runs from April 27- May 4, 2025 -- fares start at $3,954 per person.
